{"id":383183,"date":"2024-08-10T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T22:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/?p=383183"},"modified":"2024-08-23T15:11:23","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T13:11:23","slug":"ginkgo-biloba-extract-promotes-dual-task-gait-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/en\/ginkgo-biloba-extract-promotes-dual-task-gait-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Ginkgo biloba extract promotes dual-task gait safety"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Many older people with MCI have reduced gait stability.\nIt has been shown that improved dual tasking during walking significantly reduces the risk of falling.\nAn exploratory study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on gait parameters during dual-tasking.\nThe results were better in the verum group compared to the placebo group.   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<p>Study findings indicate that reduced cerebral blood flow in the frontal lobe is significantly associated with reduced gait stability, which manifests itself in reduced gait speed and stability [1].\nGinkgo biloba extract has been shown to improve cerebral microcirculation in brain regions relevant to gait stability [2].\nAgainst this background, a research team launched a randomized controlled exploratory study to investigate the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on gait parameters [3].\nThe study included 50 patients aged 50 to 85 years with mild <em> cognitive impairment ( <\/em>MCI) and associated gait problems in dual-task tasks (slowing of walking speed by at least 10% compared to single-task).\nThis was a monocentric study conducted at the University Hospital of Basel.\nThe study results were published in the journal <em>Aging Clinical and Experimental Research<\/em>.     <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"gait-parameters-improved-under-ginkgo-treatment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gait parameters improved under Ginkgo treatment<\/h3>\n\n<p>The study participants received either a Ginkgo biloba extract (120 mg, 2\u00d7\/d) or placebo for a period of 6 months.\nThis was followed by an open-label phase of a further 6 months in which both groups received identical amounts of the extract.\nVarious gait parameters were recorded at baseline and after 3, 6 and 12 months.\nThe primary and secondary endpoints were gait speed and stride time.\nGait analysis was carried out using the GAITRite\u00ae system, a 10 m long electronic, pressure-sensitive gait carpet that can detect even minor changes in gait.    <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Kasten_HP7_s18.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1449\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Kasten_HP7_s18.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-383148\" style=\"width:500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Kasten_HP7_s18.png 1449w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Kasten_HP7_s18-800x565.png 800w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Kasten_HP7_s18-1160x820.png 1160w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Kasten_HP7_s18-1120x791.png 1120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1449px) 100vw, 1449px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the single-task condition, patients were instructed to walk at their normal speed, while in the dual-task condition they were asked to perform additional tasks (counting backwards from 50 in steps of two or naming animals).\nThis is a well-established paradigm for testing motor cognitive interference, which is thought to indicate a decrease in gait control.\nThe data analysis showed that after six months, dual-task skills tended to improve in the verum group.\nStep frequency was significantly higher with Ginkgo biloba treatment compared to the placebo (p = 0.019, d = 0.71).\nAs improved dual-tasking during walking reduces the risk of falling, this is of clinical relevance.\nFurthermore, it was shown that the positive effects on gait parameters were more pronounced with increasing duration of gingko treatment.     <\/p>\n\n<p>Literature:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nakamura T, et al: Postural and gait disturbance correlated with decreased frontal cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer disease.\nAlzheimer Dis Assoc Disord 1997; 11: 132-139. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yoshitake T, Yoshitake S, Kehr J: The Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761(R) and its main constituent flavonoids and ginkgolides increase extracellular dopamine levels in the rat prefrontal cortex.\nBr J Pharmacol 2010; 159: 659-668. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gschwind YJ, et al: Ginkgo biloba special extract LI 1370 improves dual-task walking in patients with MCI: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled exploratory study.
