cystadenoma and teratoma of the ovary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cystadenomas are benign epithelial tumors that grow like glands and form cysts.\nMature teratomas of the ovary are benign neoplasms from various cotyledons and can exhibit different phenotypes.\nCystadenomas often lead to a feeling of abdominal pressure and teratomas are not always asymptomatic.\nImaging procedures such as ultrasound, CT or MRI are helpful for the diagnosis.     <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benign changes of the uterus and ovary have already been described in the previous articles.\nBenign ovarian neoplasms also include serous or mucinous cystadenomas, granulosa cell tumors and arrhenoblastomas [1]. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cystadenomas are usually unilocularly growing masses.\nThey can reach a considerable size with typically slow growth and only cause symptoms at a late stage.\nPostmenopausal women are then often symptomatic.\nA significant increase in abdominal circumference and a feeling of abdominal pressure are noteworthy, but the picture of an acute abdomen is rather rare.\nDue to the size of the findings, sonography is usually supplemented by computer tomography or magnetic resonance imaging in order to assess the full extent of the tumors.\nAdnexectomy should be performed in postmenopausal patients.\nComplete tumor removal is also necessary, as otherwise there is a risk of recurrence [2].        <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ubersicht1_HP9_s46.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"885\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ubersicht1_HP9_s46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-386409\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ubersicht1_HP9_s46.png 885w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ubersicht1_HP9_s46-800x486.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 885px) 100vw, 885px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teratomas are often found in women of childbearing age, including children and infants.\nThey are primarily benign tumors, and the degeneration rate is relatively low at less than 3% [1,4].\nMen can also develop teratomas, but less frequently than women.\nHowever, they are more likely to be affected by immature teratomas.\nThe distribution pattern of teratomas can be seen in <strong>Figure 1 <\/strong>.\nTeratomas consist of all three germ cell layers.\nSolid and cystic parts are present, calcifications or abortive teeth and bone components are typical, hair is also found.\nUsually asymptomatic, symptoms of an acute abdomen can occur in the event of stem rotation or rupture.\nTwo large groups of teratomas<strong> (Table 1)<\/strong> can be distinguished [3].        <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1792\" height=\"413\" data-src=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-386408 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1792px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1792\/413;width:500px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46.png 1792w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46-800x184.png 800w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46-1160x267.png 1160w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46-1536x354.png 1536w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46-1120x258.png 1120w, https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/tab1_HP9_s46-1600x369.png 1600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1792px) 100vw, 1792px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of mature teratomas in women, a distinction is made between dermoid cysts, the most common ovarian tumor in childhood, and struma ovarii.\nThese are primarily benign changes with a very low risk of degeneration.\nIf hyperthyroidism is diagnosed and the thyroid gland is unremarkable, thyroxine production in the struma ovarii should always be considered [4].    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete resection is the treatment of choice for mature teratomas.\nTreatment of the immature form corresponds to that of ovarian cancer with surgery and, depending on the stage, polychemotherapy. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sonographically<\/em>, the diagnosis of a teratoma is usually an incidental finding.\nThe ultrasound image is determined by the complex composition of different tissue components.\nHistological clarification should always be carried out, as the morphological differentiation between the mature and immature form is not clear from an image diagnosis.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full extent of the masses can be determined <em>using computer tomography<\/em>.\nThe sometimes considerable organ displacement by the cystadenomas is documented in the multiplanar reconstruction.\nThe teratomas can be differentiated by the different tissue proportions and the teeth and bone parts in particular can be identified as such by density quantification.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Magnetic resonance imaging<\/em> enables the reliable differentiation of various soft tissues, and the administration of contrast medium allows the visualization of accompanying inflammatory complications or tissue necrosis.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"case-studies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case studies<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>case example 1 (Fig. 1A to 1C)<\/strong>, a large cystadenoma can be seen in the CT scan of a 52-year-old female patient.\nIn addition to a small increase in circumference, there was a feeling of abdominal pressure and an increased urge to urinate.\nThe mass led to a considerable displacement of the adjacent bowel loops and to a considerable compression of the urinary bladder.    <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/abb1_HP9_s47.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2008\" height=\"838\" data-src=\"https:\/\/medizinonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/abb1_HP9_s47.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-386412 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 2008px;
