The number of new cases of skin cancer has risen sharply in recent years. Melanomas are less common than basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, but account for around 70% of all deaths caused by skin cancer. In addition to primary prevention using the three pillars of UV protection (avoiding high UV exposure; physical protection; sunscreen), secondary prevention in the form of skin cancer screening is another important and effective measure.
