While around 7% of adolescents worldwide reported elevated anxiety symptoms and 7.5% depressive symptoms in 2015, global estimates from 2021 show significantly higher values: 20.5% of adolescents have elevated anxiety symptoms and 25.2% depressive symptoms. Meta-analyses show that depressive disorders in adolescence are associated with negative effects on school performance, labor market integration, early parenthood, suicidal behavior and substance use.
