Starting out in the hospital setting is often challenging for junior medical professionals. In addition to a lot of stamina and professional skills, communication skills, knowledge of non-medical areas such as insurance or ethical-legal aspects are also required. The guide “Die oberärztliche Tätigkeit – eine neue Herausforderung” is published today by hogrefe Verlag and supports prospective and current senior physicians in their complex area of responsibility. A “must-have” – not only for the next generation of physicians.
The transition from resident to senior physician is often associated with uncertainty and stress – this has been scientifically proven. A study in twelve Swiss hospitals showed that young senior physicians see gaps in their knowledge, especially in non-medical areas. The new guide, entitled “The senior physician’s job – a new challenge,” is intended to remedy the situation. It is primarily aimed at young physicians who will soon or have already moved into senior medical practice. It addresses questions such as: How do I guarantee high medical quality based on the latest research? What are my tasks in emergency situations, what do I have to consider in infectious or pharmacological challenges, how do I master difficult communicative situations, how do I take care of palliative patients?
In addition, he gives practical tips on teaching and presentation techniques, on the new leadership tasks and on self-organization, including burn-out prophylaxis. Important legal and administrative topics are also addressed, such as reporting obligations, duty of clarification/documentation, reporting, as well as basic knowledge of the Swiss healthcare system. The book also contains useful links to medical apps, guidelines and the most important internal medicine societies in Switzerland.
