Type 1 diabetes develops in several stages, whereby in the first preclinical phase only diabetes-specific autoantibodies are initially present in the blood, but the patients are normoglycaemic. Targeted screening is required to identify this risk population. It is important to bear in mind that although type 1 diabetes mainly affects pediatric patients, it can also occur in adults.
