Immunosenescence and inflammaging are now regarded as central biological mechanisms of ageing. The age-related altered immune system is both weakened and chronically activated – with consequences for susceptibility to infection, tumor development and the large group of inflammation-driven cardiometabolic diseases. In the following, central molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations and potential intervention approaches are summarized based on current reviews and primary studies on immunosenescence, chronic inflammation and age-associated diseases.
