Psychosomatics and mental health in gynecology

Mental illnesses in women are common, serious – and systematically underdiagnosed in gynecological practice. The tripled risk of depression in the perimenopause, PMDS (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), which is recognized as an independent psychiatric diagnosis, and pathological fear of childbirth (tokophobia) directly affect daily care in gynaecological practices. Each of these entities has a clear biological basis, classifiable symptoms, validated diagnostic tools and evidence-based treatment options – and yet it often takes years between the first symptom and the correct diagnosis.
