The second national patient survey in child and adolescent psychiatry gives the clinics assessed a good report card. The children and adolescents hospitalized in 2023 and their parents gave the commitment of the staff the highest marks.
(red) In 2023, child and adolescent psychiatry clinics were largely able to meet the expectations and needs of young patients and their parents. This is shown by the results of the second nationwide satisfaction survey.
Children and adolescents are satisfied with their stay in hospital
At the end of their hospital stay, the 11 to 18-year-old patients completed a questionnaire with 29 questions in eight subject areas. With 4.13 out of a possible 5 points, the area “Commitment of doctors, psychologists, nursing staff, social education workers” received the highest score. The topic “Reception” was also rated very positively with 4.04 points. The area of “Information and education” closed with 3.96 points, while the aspects surveyed relating to “Living and life on the ward” and “Discharge and follow-up treatment” each scored 3.83 points. The topic of “treatment” scored 3.76 points and “looking back on treatment and its benefits” 3.65 points. 83.8% of respondents felt that the length of their stay was “just right”.
The proportion of problematic answers was highest for the questions on length of stay (16.2%), followed by the areas “Review of treatment and its benefits” (13.9%) and “Discharge and follow-up treatment” (13.5%). There were the fewest problematic answers in the questions on information and education (4.6%).
Parents praise staff and reception the most
Parents were surveyed on the basis of 31 questions in seven subject areas. It also resulted in high satisfaction scores for the treating staff: the area of “Commitment of doctors, psychologists, nursing staff, social education workers” achieved the best result with 4.50 out of a possible 5 points. The “Reception” area received 4.44 points, followed by “Information and education” with 4.30 points and “Discharge and aftercare” with 4.20 points. The areas of “Treatment” and “Review of treatment and its benefits” scored 4.13 and 3.98 points respectively. 93.0% of parents rated the length of stay as “exactly right”.
Most problematic responses were recorded for the topics “Length of stay” (7.0%) and “Treatment” (5.1%). These were followed in third place by “Review of treatment and its benefits” and “Discharge and follow-up treatment”, each with 4.7%. The lowest proportion of problematic responses was in the area of “Information and education” (2.2%).
Higher response rate
A total of 1972 children and young people and 1279 parents took part in the year-round national satisfaction survey. For the first time, the questionnaire was also aimed at parents of children under the age of 11. However, these only made up a small proportion of just under 4%. The response rate for children and young people was a very good 67.2%. Among parents, the response rate rose to 45.0%.
