Pulmonology – Lobus venae acygos

The acygos vein is the thoracic continuation of the ascending lumbar veins cranial to the diaphragm and runs paravertebrally to the right of the thoracic vertebral bodies. With a prevalence of less than 1% in the population, the atypical course of the acygos vein is the cause of a finding visible on X-rays or computed tomography scans in the right upper lobe of the lung. This anatomical variant may occur more frequently in certain families and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
