The Swiss Stroke Society SHG celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016. As an interdisciplinary society, it is open to all professionals involved in cerebrovascular treatment and promotes clinical and scientific collaboration. This year’s annual meeting of the SHG took place on January 27 in Basel.
The annual meeting always aims to promote exchange between experts in the fields of neurology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery such as scientists, nurses and therapists. This year again, a scientifically informative and practice-relevant conference took place, with continuing education in an interdisciplinary and interprofessional circle at the highest level.
The comprehensive topical offerings included sessions on “Intracerebral Bleeding,” “Cytoprotection in acute stroke,” and “Imaging modalities in acute stroke.” The program was rounded off with the Swiss Stroke Trialists’ Meeting and the hands-on workshop on “Interventional neuroradiology in acute stroke” at the University Hospital Basel.
Interdisciplinary working groups
The Swiss Stroke Trialists’ Meeting was introduced in 2008 to discuss scientific projects and establish consortia. From the beginning, the goals of the SHG were to communicate and exchange knowledge on all diagnostic and therapeutic topics related to cerebrovascular diseases. For this purpose, various interdisciplinary working groups have been established, which deal, for example, with “Acute Therapy of Cerebral Stroke”, “Intracranial Hemorrhage” or “Drug Secondary Prophylaxis” and develop medical guidelines. In 2010, a thematic group was also established to promote the next generation of stroke physicians and is run by the Swiss Young Stroke Physicians.
The quality of stroke care was significantly improved by supporting the development of stroke units and stroke centers and their certification in collaboration with the Swiss Federation of Clinical Neurosocieties (SFCNS). SHG’s website, www.neurovasc.ch, lists an overview of these centers. Corresponding areas can be clicked on a map to obtain specific information about the respective stroke unit. The information is intended for patients as well as referring physicians.
The 21st annual meeting of the SHG will be held on 25. and 26 January 2018 at the CHUV in Lausanne.
