Type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease are closely linked. Thus, diabetes is not only one of the most important cardiovascular risk factors, but also increases the morbidity and mortality of those affected. In this training, current findings on this topic are summarized and the practical consequences of the new therapy recommendations are highlighted on the basis of two case studies.

Study data in recent years have made clear the enormous extent to which diabetes mellitus type 2 promotes the development of cardiovascular disease. In addition, it became clear that certain drug classes have a direct impact on reducing cardiovascular risk in patients with diabetes. For this reason, the recommendations of the Swiss Society of Endocrinology and Diabetology (SGED) were adapted last year. Read more about the relevant studies and cardiovascular innovations here: Focus on diabetes and the heart: new studies and new recommendations

For a practical deepening of the topic, you can watch two patient cases in video format below.

Prof. Roger Lehmann, MD, presents the case of a 61-year-old female patient who has had diabetes for 6 years and suffered a heart attack three years ago. She also has peripheral polyneuropathy, nonproliferative retinopathy, and macroalbuminuria. You will learn how the patient can be treated as optimally as possible in this case study.

Prof. François Mach, MD, explains the case of a patient with diabetes who has RIVA stenosis in addition to nonproliferative retinopathy. As the disease progresses, he also develops heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and renal insufficiency. Learn more about adjusting therapy as the disease progresses in this case study.
