Update Evidence-Based Treatment of Alcohol Dependence

The guideline-based treatment regimen presented in this presentation includes four treatment phases.

1. Motivation (based on the theoretical model of the stages of change)
2. Withdrawal/detoxification (cessation of substance intake and drug treatment of withdrawal syndrome).
3. Weaning (pharmacotherapy combined with psychotherapy)
4. Follow-up care (short-term contacts with family physicians and support group)

The risk of relapse can be significantly reduced by completing withdrawal therapy after withdrawal/detoxification is complete.
