After the patient had been admitted to hospital for investigation of fever attacks, night sweats and an unintentional weight loss of 18 kg within six months, pancytopenia was diagnosed with no evidence of focal infection, malignancy or rheumatological disease. The diagnosis proved to be a tricky matter.
