Managing patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding can be a balancing act. Clinical scores are helpful for time-sensitive risk assessment in the emergency department: Is the patient stable? Is urgent intervention required? The timing of endoscopy is a key consideration: in most cases, it should ideally be performed within 24 hours after the patient has been sufficiently stabilized. However, in cases of varices, endoscopy is recommended within 6–12 hours. What else should be taken into account?
