In a recent study, the inflammatory correlates in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) were analyzed before and after oral antibiotic therapy. There is evidence that the efficacy of systemic antibiotics in HS can be attributed to the anti-inflammatory rather than the antibacterial properties of the respective substances [1,2]. Based on the results of their analyses, the study authors conclude that rifampicin monotherapy may be considered for certain subgroups of HS patients.
