During the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, microglial cells located in the vicinity of plaques become overactivated and release cytotoxic mediators such as TNFα. In an animal study published in 2025, Nguyen et al. were able to show, among other things, that increased TNFα levels in 5xFAD mice could be normalized by a five-week administration of EGb-761®-containing feed and that an influence on microglia subpopulations contributed to this effect.
