Topically applied medications are a cornerstone of the field-directed treatment of actinic keratoses. In photodynamic therapy, a topical agent is combined with a procedural method. In cases of insufficient response, severe hyperkeratosis or in high-risk patients, other combined therapy strategies can also be considered, such as lesion-directed destruction of individual lesions followed by field-directed therapy. Immunocompromised patients have an increased risk of progression from AK lesions to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
