Male infertility represents a significant challenge in urological practice and is responsible for around 40-50% of all cases of involuntary childlessness in couples. Despite comprehensive clinical investigations, the exact cause remains unknown in around 70% of affected men and is classified as idiopathic infertility. Only in recent years has it become clear that conventional diagnostic approaches – consisting of a medical history, physical examination, spermiogram and limited genetic diagnostics – are not sufficient to fully understand the molecular basis of this complex disorder.
