Thymomas are tumors of the thymus and are benign in around 75% of cases. A quarter of thymomas are malignant – they are divided into malignant thymomas and thymic carcinomas depending on the appearance and degree of differentiation of the diseased cells and their tendency to spread [1,3,4]. At 0.2-1.5% of all human malignancies in German-speaking countries and 1.7/1,000,000 in Europe, they account for a very small proportion.
