Under the label Kollegium Brustkrebs, a continuing education platform for specialists interested in breast cancer was created in 2008. The platform is characterized by a high level of quality and is recognized by professional societies. The full-day courses are also very popular as block courses and can be credited towards the Senology Diploma.
Diagnosis, therapy and aftercare of breast cancer have changed significantly over the past decades and are still evolving today. New data on diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches are published almost daily. As a result, it is not always easy in daily work to keep up to date and integrate the latest data into everyday decisions in the clinic or practice. In order to be able to update one’s own knowledge, large congress events are very important. However, due to their size, they are often not very interactive. With this in mind, the College Breast Cancer Continuing Education Platform was founded to provide standardized continuing education with assured quality throughout the country.
The goal of the College of Breast Cancer is the interactive transfer of practice-oriented knowledge within the framework of regional advanced training courses and the optimization of the cooperation between specialists in private practice and tumor centers. The training content is developed by a panel of experts, continuously updated, and made available to regional centers that wish to provide high-level training on breast cancer.
The continuing education program consists of two modules: The first module focuses on basics of breast cancer management such as epidemiology and risk factors, diagnostics, the basic therapeutic concept, primary and adjuvant therapy, and the principles of targeted therapy, and also features a workshop on minimally invasive procedures. This is a hands-on workshop recognized under MIBB accreditation that teaches biopsying with a variety of equipment. The second module focuses on soft skills in dealing with breast cancer patients and adds other content not considered in detail in the first module. Topics such as metastatic breast cancer, compliance, body image and sexuality in breast cancer, as well as topics such as breast cancer in different age groups will be the focus. As part of this second module, participants will discuss several cases at a tumor board and work out the approach to therapy.
The continuing education program is aimed at specialists who care for patients with breast cancer and would like to experience compact, exciting and competent continuing education.
The response of the events held over the past five years confirms that a good program was created with the College of Breast Cancer. In accordance with the guidelines of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, the platform is supported by several companies – Pfizer AG, Orion Pharma AG and Roche Pharma (Switzerland) AG – and recognized by professional societies.
