The characteristics of type 2 diabetes vary from patient to patient and the disease is thought to consist of four subtypes. However, a new study shows that smoking significantly increases the risk of developing the disease, regardless of the subtype. In addition, researchers have found that people with a genetic predisposition to diabetes appear to be particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of this disease.
