Inselspital cardiac surgeon and editor of CARDIOVASC Prof. Thierry Carrel, MD, is the best cardiac surgery educator in Europe. This title was awarded to him by the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
The Leonardo Da Vinci Award of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) honors cardiac and thoracic (chest) surgeons who are particularly good at passing on their knowledge to the next generation of surgeons and thus also set standards. The candidates are nominated by the trainee junior staff themselves, i.e. by assistant physicians. Three candidates will face each other in the final round.
Selection was based on anonymous interviews with one resident, one surgical nurse specialist, and one senior physician on the surgical team. Leadership and training qualities such as accessibility or patience, resourcefulness, professionalism (e.g. in stressful situations), communication and structure of the training are assessed. The jury does not know whose dossier it is judging. Thus, “vitamin B” or antipathies can be excluded.
