Although bacterial tonsillitis is less common than viral tonsillitis, it is clinically relevant due to potential complications. Pragmatic scoring systems such as the McIsaac criteria and microbiology testing help to guide appropriate treatment and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. If the angina episodes become more frequent and in some other cases, tonsillectomy or tonsillotomy should be considered. A peritonsillar abscess is an urgent complication that requires prompt intervention.
