Studies show that primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) are associated with a significantly increased risk of developing osteopenia or osteoporosis. For this reason, the S3 guideline “Rare liver diseases” published in 2025 recommends bone density measurements at the time of diagnosis and, if necessary, in the further course of the disease.
