Swelling of the lower extremities is common, especially in older adults. Due to the complex interrelationships, the clarification of such findings in general practice is a challenge. The differential diagnostic spectrum of leg edema is diverse and ranges from phlebological, inflammatory or traumatological causes to iatrogenic and other causes of fluid accumulation in the tissue. The clinical probability of thrombosis can be estimated using the Wells score.
