Despite a variety of approved antidepressant treatments, major depressive disorder (MDD) remains one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and has been shown to shorten the life expectancy of affected patients. Intranasal esketamine has been shown in a study to be significantly effective even without concomitant oral antidepressants, offering an important alternative for patients with intolerance or lack of response to conventional antidepressants.
