If the cough, pain, difficulty swallowing or fever persists for more than four days or worsens, you need to take a closer look, consider using imaging techniques and, if necessary, consider antibiotics. However, in the spirit of antibiotic stewardship, antibiotics should not be used prematurely. Prof. Dr. med. Philip Tarr, Co-Head of Internal Medicine and Head of Infectiology and Hospital Hygiene at Baselland Cantonal Hospital, gave advice on diagnostic clarification and explained the current recommendations on when antibiotic treatment is appropriate and what to look out for.
