Age-associated degenerative processes in the hyaline cartilage are common. In the case of symptomatic osteoarthritis at an early stage, conservative treatment is initially sought. In addition to classification and localization of the chondral defect, the choice of the appropriate form of therapy depends on the patient’s level of suffering and general condition. Exercise promotes synovial flow, which increases the supply to undersupplied cartilage areas. Topical anti-rheumatic drugs are a treatment option with few side effects before starting oral pain therapy. With oral NSAIDs, the duration of treatment should be limited to 2-4 weeks if possible.
