SGLT2 inhibitors also significantly reduce the risk of kidney disease progression in patients with type 2 diabetes and preserved kidney function, whereby the relative benefit is independent of albuminuria status. However, a cohort study showed that the absolute benefit strongly depends on the individual baseline risk and can be better estimated using a prediction model than albuminuria thresholds alone. Such a prediction-based approach could guide therapy in a more targeted manner and prevent more cases of renal progression than the current guideline-based strategy.
