If chronic back pain occurs in patients under the age of 45, axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) should also be considered as a suspected diagnosis, according to an ASAS recommendation. Unfortunately, this disease, which is characterized by inflammation of the sacroiliac joint and limited mobility of the lumbar spine, is often only diagnosed after a considerable delay, reported Prof. Kyburz, MD, and explained how axSpA can be detected at an early stage nowadays.
