In Switzerland, all regions except Ticino are considered risk areas. The spread of the common wood tick (Ixodes ricinus) is also increasingly affecting higher-altitude areas, with outbreaks detected up to around 2000 meters above sea level. Up to 1% of ticks carry the TBE virus. Vaccination is the only reliable and effective way of protecting yourself. Three doses are required for complete basic immunization. The vaccination is generally well tolerated, the first two doses are usually administered 2-4 weeks apart.
