The median survival time for live-born children with complete trisomy 13 without medical intervention is 7-10 days. Over 90% of affected newborns die in the first year of life. Risk factors for early death are male gender, premature birth and the presence of congenital heart defects. The most common causes of death are heart failure and central apnea. Patients who survive infancy usually exhibit severe psychomotor developmental delays, failure to thrive, mental retardation and seizures.
