Type 1 diabetes can occur in any age group. In adults, however, type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is often diagnosed first, and autoantibodies indicative of T1DM are only detected later. The consequences of a delayed diagnosis can be dramatic and show how important it is to be vigilant in patients with T2DM and progressive or rapid deterioration in blood glucose control and to keep an eye out for the possible development of autoimmune diabetes.
