In February 2026, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) published a new guideline on the assessment and treatment of acute pulmonary embolism in cooperation with other US professional societies. An important innovation is the introduction of clinical categories (A-E), which are intended to improve the severity classification, prognosis assessment and evidence-based therapeutic decision-making in acute pulmonary embolism.
