Support rational use of blood products in times of COVID-19 – with Patient Blood Management (PBM)

PBM is an evidence-based approach that aims to improve clinical outcomes and ensure the safety of the blood supply, while saving money. It is based on the following 3 pillars1,2

  • Optimization of erythrocyte volume through preoperative anemia assessment and treatment.
  • Minimization of perioperative blood loss
  • Improving anemia tolerance through a restrictive transfusion regimen.

Various institutions such as WHO, ECDC, ASA, and SABM recommend the implementation of PBM measures to provide the necessary care and treatment to the most vulnerable patients during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.3-7

PBM –  3 pillars for careful handling of patient blood

The WHO-recommended PBM is a patient-centered, multidisciplinary program8. It is based on the knowledge that anemia, blood transfusions and blood loss prior to surgery have a negative impact on the success of the procedure.

All PBM interventions therefore aim to reduce or avoid these risk factors in order to reduce complications, shorten hospitalization time, and decrease mortality and costs9-13. Widespread scientific acceptance and the obvious benefits to patients, hospitals, and health care systems have led to the introduction of PBM programs at the national level in numerous countries.

In addition to the benefits for patients, the various measures of the PBM can make a valuable contribution by helping to reduce healthcare costs and ensure the long-term supply of blood products14,15.

PBM in times of COVID-19

Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, this topic is topical. As a result of the restrictions that had to be put in place by governments to combat the spread of COVID-19, blood donations could not be sustained either, leading to a severe reduction in blood reserves. PBM can play a role in preventing shortages during the pandemic and mitigating socioeconomic stresses after the pandemic. Reducing risk factors frees up resources for other needs.16

Alliance Rouge and Vifor Pharma are committed to the implementation of PBM in Swiss hospitals

In Switzerland, the Alliance Rouge is working to establish PBM as a quality criterion in the Swiss healthcare system(www.alliance-rouge.ch). Given the debate about the savings to be made in the health sector, this WHO-sponsored approach offers a unique opportunity to increase patient safety while reducing costs to the community.

Vifor Pharma Switzerland supports and accompanies Swiss hospitals with specific services on their way to implement the concept of PBM(www.viforpharma.ch). Contact us for more information: www.viforpharma.ch/de/opt-in.
