Medicine and its training are constantly evolving and adapting to new realities. Because multiple sclerosis is a disease with a thousand faces, there is a high demand for specialized professionals. The new master’s program in Dresden (D) now does justice to this. The program provides in-service training for specialists and managers in the healthcare sector.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 10,000 people in Switzerland and is currently considered incurable. The consequences include muscle weakness, paralysis, reduction of the optic nerves or a spasmodic increase in muscle tension. The course of the disease is individual for each patient, which is why it is known as the “disease of a thousand faces”. Early diagnosis and therapy are crucial for the further course of the disease. Individually adapted therapy options make patients’ lives easier and inhibit the process of the disease. Treatment is lifelong and very complex. Therefore, the need for trained and specialized forces is high. In October, the unique master’s program “Multiple Sclerosis Management” started at Dresden International University (DIU). The continuing education program is designed for physicians, therapists, scientists, psychologists, pharmacists, biologists or nurses who wish to specialize in MS. The prerequisite is a degree in human medicine or a related field with a total of 240 ECTS credits. Furthermore, individuals with an initial academic degree who have completed training in a health profession and one year of professional work in the field of MS may enter the master’s program. After successful completion, they receive the title “Master of Science” (M.Sc.). The part-time course of study is spread over four semesters and is held primarily in online seminars. In addition, practical units are offered, for which we have selected centers with great experience in diagnostics and therapy. The course is divided into the modules “Theoretical Foundations”, “Clinic and Diagnostics”, “Studies and Statistics”, “Therapy and Rehabilitation”, “Monitoring and Documentation” on MS and other neuroimmunological diseases. The prospective experts learn detailed and scientifically based diagnostics and differential diagnostics for suspected chronic inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. They are supported by renowned specialists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After successful introduction of the new degree program, internationalization is planned.
