Since an international Delphi consensus in 2023, the condition formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been called MASLD— “metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.” It is defined as fatty liver (steatosis) in the presence of at least one cardiometabolic risk factor and in the absence of harmful alcohol consumption. The inflammatory form, formerly known as NASH, is now called MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis). The spectrum of the disease ranges from simple steatosis through MASH with liver damage and inflammation to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
