Otoscopic evaluation of the eardrum is crucial to diagnose acute otitis media. This is a very common and usually self-limiting infection in children. The quintessence of current guideline recommendations is that careful consideration must be given to whether there is an indication for antibiotic treatment. Analgesic measures and watchful waiting are often sufficient, but there are some exceptions.
