It is the first new class of antihypertensive drugs in years: On May 18, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Baxdrostat (Baxfendy) as the first and only aldosterone synthase inhibitor for the treatment of hypertension. The drug targets a root cause of difficult-to-control hypertension—excessive aldosterone production—and lowers blood pressure in areas where established treatments often reach their limits. The approval is supported by the Phase III BaxHTN study, complemented by the Bax24 study on 24-hour blood pressure monitoring in resistant hypertension. With lorundrostat as the second aldosterone synthase inhibitor and zilebesiran as an RNA-based approach, a whole wave of new therapeutic principles is also emerging.
