Ovarian and prostate cancers rely on common hormonal, genetic and inflammatory mechanisms that influence both tumor progression and gonadal reproductive function in both sexes; in addition, ovarian stem cell populations identified by the Tilly lab show that adult germ cell niches have regenerative potentials whose activity is functionally impaired by aging, inflammation and metabolic stress. The text makes it clear that the same endocrine and epigenetic networks that characterize PCOS, endometriosis and male fertility disorders also control the pathogenesis of hormone-dependent tumors and thus open up new starting points for prevention, fertility preservation and personalized therapies.
