Despite a declining incidence rate, the total number of cases and deaths from gastric cancer continues to rise worldwide. Infection with Helicobacter pylori is the main risk factor for the disease; however, the burden caused by this bacterium is unevenly distributed across geographical regions and is not yet fully defined.
