People with diabetes have a significantly increased risk of tuberculosis and poorer treatment outcomes, which is why systematic diabetes screening is recommended for TB patients. A meta-analysis showed that previously undetected diabetes is detected in about 7.7% of TB patients through screening. However, some of the hyperglycemia may be transient, so re-evaluation is necessary. The results argue for adapted, regional screening strategies and better integration of diabetes care into TB treatment.
