In the context of precision medicine, a differentiated approach to the diagnosis of obesity provides an essential foundation for implementing improved strategies for prevention, treatment, and prognosis. Obesity is often caused by a polygenic disorder of energy regulation, but there are also rare monogenic and syndromic forms of obesity that arise as early as infancy due to a lack of satiety. Like other chronic diseases, obesity requires long-term medical care—a multimodal treatment approach is most likely to be successful.
