The term malnutrition encompasses more than just insufficient food intake; it is an independent clinical picture with clearly defined effects on complication rates, functionality and mortality, which can be influenced by structured nutritional therapy. In polymorbid patients with chronic lung diseases and after severe pneumonia, malnutrition is a central, often underestimated prognostic factor.
