The prevalence of clinically relevant anxiety and depression symptoms in children and adolescents has increased significantly in recent years. While around 7% of adolescents worldwide reported elevated anxiety symptoms and 7.5% depressive symptoms in 2015, global estimates from 2021 show significantly higher values: 20.5% of adolescents have elevated anxiety symptoms and 25.2% depressive symptoms. Meta-analyses show that depressive disorders in adolescence are associated with negative effects on school performance, labor market integration, early parenthood, suicidal behavior and substance use. Anxiety disorders are also associated with later mental illness, substance use, health problems, self-harm, difficulties in working life and financial burdens.
