The pleura is involved in about 30% of all diseases affecting the respiratory system. This is often characterized by the appearance of an effusion. Concomitant heart, liver and kidney diseases usually involve transudates with a proportion of 40-46%. Exudates requiring clarification are estimated at up to 60% in a mixed internal medicine patient population.
