Diet as a possible influencing factor on mental health has been the subject of intense debate for years. It is repeatedly assumed that a healthy diet can alleviate depressive symptoms or even prevent the development of depression. A recent systematic review with meta-analyses in the Journal of Affective Disorders has now presented the most comprehensive overview of the question of whether dietary quality is actually a relevant factor in the course and prevention of depression. The result is sobering: Despite numerous studies, there is a lack of convincing evidence to date.
