Nowadays, the choice of drug therapy is no longer based solely on thebaseline HbA1c level, but also on risk factors or comorbidities such as heart failure, kidney disease, or obesity. Due to their additional cardiorenal benefits, SGLT-2 inhibitors or incretin mimetics are recommended as add-ons to metformin for many people with type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it has been shown that additive effects can be achieved by combining SGLT-2 inhibitors and incretin mimetics. The fact that a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist has now also become established in clinical practice represents a further optimization of treatment options.
