95% of all hypertensive patients have primary hypertension. Over the years, the classification has evolved into a more differentiated system. The current ESC guideline, for example, differentiates between hypertension, raised blood pressure and non-raised blood pressure and also advocates a risk-based approach to determine the indication for treatment. A step-by-step approach is intended to ensure safe and stable blood pressure control.
